UNFCU Foundation Grant 2020

The United Nations Federal Credit Union (UNFCU) Foundation announced its list of UNFCU grant recipients for 2020, which included The Floating Hospital.

The UNFCU Foundation are longtime supporters. Recently, they awarded The Floating Hospital $50,000 to provide mental health services to over 1,000 women and girls.

In addition The Floating Hospital committed to helping at least 80% of them achieve their long-term goals.

For example, improving their health, getting a job and obtaining permanent housing.

While most of the grant will go towards funding a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), it will also support the salaries of a psychologist, a psychiatrist, a senior case manager and a scheduler.

All of whom work together to ensure patients receive the services they need to support their mental and physical health.

A robust behavioral health program is crucial for homeless families.

Why the UNFCU Foundation grant is important

Adults and children in homeless families face higher rates of mental illness compared to the housed population.

Homeless teens suffer from depression at a rate of 40% compared to 28% of their housed peers. And they’re more than three times as likely to consider suicide.

Domestic violence accounts for 40% of family homelessness. And, it often leaves survivors with depression, anxiety, low self-esteem and post-traumatic stress disorder.

We help patients find ways to overcome trauma, manage stress, and recover from addictions. The Floating Hospital gives patients a solid basis to succeed in reaching important life goals.

The Floating Hospital never turns anyone away.

When patients don’t have insurance, funding such as the UNFCU grant allows us to cover the cost of services for patients who otherwise could not afford them. The Floating Hospital has a 20% rate of charity care, ten times higher than a typical nonprofit US hospital.

Additionally, many services, such as helping patients to apply for SNAP or affordable housing, are not covered by insurance. Therefore, we rely on grants and donations to subsidize this type of support.

UNFCU Foundation is a New York-based, non-profit corporation launched in 2015. It was established by the United Nations Federal Credit Union (UNFCU) with a mission to sustain the path out of poverty through healthcare and education for women and youth.
